Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program

  • Properties built befor 1950 located in the targeted area
  • Owner occupants must have children under the age of 4 residing, visiting at least 20 hours during the week, or court ordered visitation
  • Property Taxes must be current 
  • Not in Foreclosure Status
  • Property musted be assessed under $150,000 (excludes multi-family buildings)
  • For in-home childcare facilities each child under the age of 6 years must receive parental consent to a blood lead test
  • Completed application submitted to Sherman Park Community Association
  • Meet income requirements
 
 
 
 
Who can get Lead Poisoning?
Adults and Children between the age of 6 months and 6 years.
 
How does Lead effect Children?
Lead poisoning can cause brain damage, learning and behavior problems
 
Where is Lead found?
Lead is found on the exterior and interior older homes, dirt, old water pipes, cigarette butts, old painted toys (http://www.usrecallnews.com/2007/10/list-of-recalled-toys-for-lead-poisoning-hazards-childrens-toy-recalls-from-china.html, http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/category/toy.html), magazine print, and pottery.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Why are children high risk?
Children especially small children place everything in their mouths. They also play in areas that contain lead paint chips and dust may have fallen. When children chew on surfaces containing lead or lead dust, they may become lead poisoned. Children also:
  • eat paint chips
  • chew on windowsills and railings
  • eat dirt

How to test my child for lead poisoning?
  • Blood Lead level test can be conducted by a physician or health care clinic
  • Child should be tested every year if they are between the age of 6 months to 6 years old.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Lead Poisoning and Nutrition
 
Often, there are no signs to Lead Poisoning. Some children may get a stomach ache, feel fatigue or crabby. They may be lead poisoned, but to be to certain have them tested.
 
Healthy foods that help keep Lead from hurting my children
 
Parents/guardians should feed prepare foods high in CALCIUM, IRON andVITAMIN C to assist with flushing the Lead out of the childs body. Feed children the following foods often:
 
CALCIUM
  • milk & milk products
  • salmon with bones
  • calcium-enriched orange juice
  • cheese
  • yogurt

  • red meats & poultry
